The Vengeance Belongs to the Lord

How wronged have you been?
What has been going through your mind?
There are so many problems in this world that sometimes justice seems not to exist.

But understand this: God’s justice is not — and will never be — like ours.

Romans 12:19 — “Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay,’ says the Lord.”

Let’s reflect on this together:

We live in times when human justice seems to fail on every side. The human heart rises in anger, and the desire to strike back appears almost instinctive. Yet the Word of God calls us to a higher way — the way of faith, forgiveness, and trust in the Righteous Judge.
To seek revenge is human; to trust God is divine.

Human revenge destroys, but divine justice restores

Revenge is born out of wounded pride. We want to prove we’re right, we want to see the other person pay. But the Lord teaches us:

📖 Proverbs 20:22 — “Do not say, ‘I will repay evil’; wait for the Lord, and He will deliver you.”

📖 Psalm 37:7–9 — “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways… For those who are evil will be destroyed, but those who hope in the Lord will inherit the land.”

Saint Augustine wrote: “Anger is a wind that blows out the lamp of the mind.”

When we let anger rule, we stop hearing God’s voice. But when we surrender to Him, our soul is guided again by the light of His wisdom.

Forgiveness is the path to freedom

Forgiving doesn’t mean forgetting the wrong — it means being freed from it. Those who seek revenge become prisoners of pain; those who forgive experience peace.

📖 Matthew 5:44 — “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.”

📖 Ephesians 4:31–32 — “Get rid of all bitterness, rage, and anger… Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”

Tertullian, one of the early defenders of the faith, said: “The patience of God is the salvation of men.”

When we respond to evil with good, we mirror divine patience and become instruments of reconciliation.

God is just — and His justice is perfect

Human vengeance seeks compensation; divine justice seeks restoration. God sees the unseen, knows every heart, and acts at the right time.

📖 Deuteronomy 32:35 — “It is mine to avenge; I will repay. In due time their foot will slip.”

📖 Psalm 94:1–2 — “The Lord is a God who avenges. O God who avenges, shine forth! Rise up, Judge of the earth; pay back to the proud what they deserve.”

Saint John Chrysostom taught: “Nothing so disarms your enemy as seeing that you do not retaliate.”

He understood that the absence of revenge is the highest form of spiritual strength — it reflects the very character of Christ.

Christ — the supreme example of trust

No one suffered greater injustice than Jesus. Betrayed, humiliated, and crucified unfairly, He could have called for vengeance — but chose forgiveness instead.

📖 1 Peter 2:23 — “When they hurled their insults at Him, He did not retaliate; when He suffered, He made no threats. Instead, He entrusted Himself to Him who judges justly.”

Saint Irenaeus of Lyon declared: “Christ conquered evil not by striking back, but by suffering with love.”

The Son of God showed us that God’s justice is not immediate — it is eternal and perfect.

Choose to trust, not to retaliate

When you are hurt — pray before reacting.
When you are wronged — give your case to the Lord.
When anger rises — remember: “Vengeance is mine, says the Lord.”

God is faithful to act — in the right time, in the right way, for the right purpose.

📖 Romans 12:21 — “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”

Revenge is a burden that does not belong to us. It weighs us down, corrupts our peace, and pulls us away from God. But when we surrender to Him, He turns pain into testimony, tears into victory, and injustice into redemption.

Let God be the Judge.
You — simply trust.
